Our Courses and Workshops

All courses are run by staff from the partnership organisations and are developed and delivered by professionals, many of whom will have lived experience of mental or physical illness, and/or experience of supporting someone with a mental or physical illness

Some courses may have been co-produced with experts by experience and some courses may have experts by experience co-facilitating the training.

  1. Adult Mental Health First Aider Herefordshire

    Details

    3rd and 10th December 2021 9am - 5pm   (booking closes 30thNovember)  

    Venue: The Hope Centre, Bromyard HR74QU

    Course outline:

    • Two day face-to-face course delivered across four manageable sessions
    • Learning takes place through a mix of presentations, group discussions and workshop activities
    • Each session is built around a Mental Health First Aid action plan
    • We limit numbers to 12 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn

    Course duration:  2 full days 3rd and 10th December 9am-5pm (both days must be attended)

    Course benefits:

    This interactive, internationally recognised course will give you the skills and confidence to become a Mental Health First Aider  including:

    • an understanding of what mental health is and the range of things that can affect our wellbeing
    • a knowledge of the most common mental health conditions
    • the practical skills to spot the triggers, signs and symptoms of a range of mental health problems
    • the confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress using the Mental Health First Aid  action plan
    • how to practice listening without judgement and with empathy
    • how to help someone by guiding them to further support and the knowledge of a range of  local and national resources
    • An understanding of how to keep yourself safe whilst providing Mental Health First Aid and how to look after your own wellbeing.

    Course equipment:

    Everyone who completes the course gets:

    • A certificate of attendance to say you are a Mental Health First Aider
    • A manual to refer to whenever you need it
    • A quick reference card for the Mental Health First Aid action plan
    • A workbook including a helpful toolkit to support your own mental health
    • You will need to bring a pen and spare notepaper. (Please be aware that lunch is not provided)

    Course eligibility 

    This is for you if you are over the age of 18, based in Herefordshire and  keen to learn how to better able to reassure and support someone who is going through a tough time; or if you are working as a volunteer or in a paid role where you are more likely to come across people needing help to find the right source of support for their mental health. Priority is given to those connected to Talk Community Hubs

    Course Overview: Develop new or existing skills in observation, drawing, painting and printing. Enjoy creating pieces of artwork for yourself, at your own pace.

    Course Duration: 12 weekly sessions lasting 1 hr 45 mins - Wednesday afternoons

    Course Benefits: The skills you develop can help you express your sense of self through your own artwork. Creative activity has been shown to increase concentration self-esteem, provide a sense of purpose and give structure to a day. It can enhance social skills, help people engage in social relationships and improve quality of life. Whilst sessions are led, students will be encouraged to develop their own work. Students will often progress to join other community or local education based art courses. 

    Course Equipment: All resources will be provided, or you can bring your own

    Course Eligibility: New Opportunities Worcestershire courses/activities are to help Worcestershire adults (18+) in their recovery from severe mental ill health, through engagement in meaningful roles and activities. NOW is open to Worcestershire adults who are not yet ready to access mainstream activities due to isolation, and low self-esteem. Helping them to gain confidence, reduce isolation and increase concentration to enable them to move into mainstream activities, or progress into other parts of the pathway. Other criteria may apply.

  4. Art & Self Help

    Course Overview: Have you considered painting, but felt you could never get in the right head-space to do it?  Do you find yourself overwhelmed by emotions, but even more overwhelmed by the idea of processing them?

    Course Duration: 6 weekly sessions lasting 2 hours every Friday morning.

    Course Benefits:  This one-of-a-kind Art & Self-help course teaches you to gain clarity, calmness and decisiveness so that you can thrive, manage your emotions and create beautiful objects.
    Each session we will focus on a different artistic technique and mindfulness practice, that can be adapted to taste

    Course Equipment: The tutor will contact you prior to the course starting

    Course Eligibility : Anyone over the age of 19 living in Worcestershire

  5. Art - A Night at the Museum - Online

    Course Overview: This course utilises various online Museum and Gallery tours for inspiration for sessions. We will consider various Artists and Artifacts as a base to create images using various media.

    Course Benefits: You will be supported to explore creative, virtual platforms online whilst learning some aspects of Art and Museum history.

  6. Art - Sketch Walks in Worcester

    Course Overview: A small sketching art group, meeting in a different location  on Thursday mornings each week. All within Worcester city including Worcester Cathedral, Worcester City Museum and Art Gallery, various cafe's and local popular landmarks.  This small, supportive group is for any level of artist and is a weekly opportunity for you to develop your observation, sketching and social skills.

    Course Duration: 12 weekly sessions lasting 2 hours  - Thursday mornings

    Course Benefits: Skills you develop can help you express your sense of self through your own artwork. Creative activity has been shown to increase concentration self-esteem, provide a sense of purpose and give structure to a day.   7. Cardmaking - Online

    Course Overview: From week 1 you will learn basic skills in card making techniques in order for you to produce some stunning cards by week 11. 

    Course Duration: 11 weekly sessions on Wednesday afternoons lasting 1.5 hours

    Course Benefits: Creative activity has been shown to increase self-esteem, provide a sense of purpose and give structure to a day. It can enhance social skills, help people engage in social relationships builds concentration and confidence which improves quality of life and adds a little bit of fun.

    Course Equipment needed: Card in  assorted colours, Scissors, Wet glue, Double sided tape, Foam tabs

    Course Eligibility:  New Opportunities Worcestershire courses/activities are to help Worcestershire adults (18+) in their recovery from severe mental ill health, through engagement in meaningful roles and activities. NOW is open to Worcestershire adults who are not yet ready to access mainstream activities due to isolation, and low self-esteem. Helping them to gain confidence, reduce isolation and increase concentration to enable them to move into mainstream activities, or progress into other parts of the pathway. Other criteria may apply.
