Our Courses and Workshops

All courses are run by staff from the partnership organisations and are developed and delivered by professionals, many of whom will have lived experience of mental or physical illness, and/or experience of supporting someone with a mental or physical illness.

Some courses may have been co-produced with experts by experience and some courses may have experts by experience co-facilitating the training.

  1. Art

    Course Overview: Develop new or existing skills in observation, drawing, painting and printing. Enjoy creating pieces of artwork for yourself, at your own pace. 

    Course Duration: 12 weekly sessions lasting 2 hours 

    Course Benefits: The skills you develop can help you express your sense of self through your own artwork. Creative activity has been shown to increase concentration self-esteem, provide a sense of purpose and give structure to a day. It can enhance social skills, help people engage in social relationships and improve quality of life. Whilst sessions are led, students will be encouraged to develop their own work. Students will often progress to join other community or local education based art courses. 

    Course Equipment: All resources will be provided, or you can bring your own

    Course Eligibility: Worcestershire residents already accessing NHS mental health support services

  2. Art at the Movies

    Course Overview: We will explore images, listen to soundtracks and play interactive quizzes as we go along. We will examine themes, graphics and characters to create original Art at home. Share your favourite films and discover new ones. Whatever your ability, you are welcome to join us to discover new ideas for your artwork. 

    Course Duration: 5 weekly sessions lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes

    Course Benefits: To create a stage where we can chat about film and sketch together, to create art inspired by the films we love, and through conversation we might discover some new favourites.

    Course Eligibility: Anyone over the age of 19 living in Herefordshire or Worcestershire, who has not accessed a WEA course before

  3. Autism Awareness for Carers

    Course Overview: In this session we will explore some of the causes of autism and dispel the myths and stereotypes. Many typical stereotypes include a lack of empathy, lack of interest in relationships, lowered emotional experience, lack of creativity, inability to learn. The session will allow an opportunity to understand barriers to engagement and to appreciate that autism is a high anxiety condition without the anxiety symptoms.

    Course Duration: Single session lasting 2 hours

    Course Benefits: Carers of someone with Autism share their knowledge tips frustrations and experience with each other while guided towards better coping strategies thanks to the expertise of Clinical Psychologist and Autism Expert Bill Say.

    Course Eligibility: Carers registered with Worcestershire Association of Carers

  5. Beginners Hand Embroidery

    Course Overview: This is a beginner’s course providing the opportunity to learn some foundation Hand Embroidery stitches. Practice this beautiful and relaxing craft in our sociable group. Together we will try out a variety of stitches and then look at how the different combinations can create flower shapes. You can also follow Ruth's stunning work

    Course Duration: 5 weekly sessions lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes

    Course Benefits: To practice a selection of Hand Embroidery Stitches with the guidance and support of your tutor and fellow students.

  6. Connecting Our Communities

    Course Overview: A workshop for volunteers and workers with community members to support first digital steps. It includes problem -solving and discussion about potential funding soures to help isolated people get online.

    Course Benefits: To feel confident supporting people with limited digital confidence or accesss to technology to get online.

  7. Craft

    Course Overview: Share or learn a wide variety of Crafts using different mediums- from paper to fabric to wood. 

    Course Duration: 12 weekly sessions lasting 2 hours

    Course Benefits: Research shows that crafting has a number of positive therapeutic effects on wellbeing. These include managing pain and unstructured time as well as increasing self-esteem and developing social skills. It is also a great way to communicate and exchange ideas.
